Music
I spent a long time thinking I wanted to be a musician as my primary vocation. I came to music late, but worked ridiculously hard at it, and I learned a great deal, although not quite enough. One of my problems was that I thought I was going to be really, really good. This is not to say that I had an inflated view of my talents, just that I set my sights unrealistically high: I’m a bass player, and my ambition was to play electric like Gary Willis and upright like Dave Holland. It was never going to happen.
Along the way, I was involved in some rewarding musical ensembles, and I had a lot of fun at times. At the moment my involvement in practical music making is limited to two projects.
Leaf
Leaf is a collaboration with the excellent, and genuinely talented Alistair Lindsay. I played bass on his album Songs From Under The Table, which remains the most accomplished recording I can be heard on. What leaf will turn out to be remains to be seen, but it’s bound to be good, so watch this space.
Chuckin Custard
I thought this band was a joke when it started: since we dropped the rock covers from the set I’ve thought differently. It’s a kind of a raw, noisy punk metal thing, and at our best we’re tight, heavy and lots of fun. There’s nothing to link to at the moment, but we’re going to record soon, and then I’ll be maxing out the social marketing in the hopes of getting us some gigs.
